Two-way Pagers, An Alternative To Cell Phones?

I believe the cell phone is here to stay and an integral part of our culture. Two-way pagers are an alternate way to communicate and there are several advantages. First, a cell phone has a battery that needs to be constantly recharged. A pager has a battery that will last for months at a time. The two-way pager is great for discreetly sending messages to another pager. No annoying voices in the movie theater or a restaurant.

The first pagers were one-way pagers that only were capable of receiving a number that you would then need to go to a phone to call back. When two-way pagers became available, they had some interesting features. It is capable of retrieving personal e-mail messages and sending them as well. The pager has a small keyboard you may use to type out your outgoing messages or answers. It also has access to the Internet. You can find sports scores, weather conditions and access
other Internet websites.

Another advantage of these devices is you can also use it to access your personal computer. We can use it to access information such as address book, calendar and a to do list. You easily access these through your pager. The pager also functions as a PDF with word processing powers.

These handy little devices have become popular with the younger age group. With handheld devices specifically marketed to grade school age children they promise a way to keep in touch with your friends even if they are in another class. It's amazing to see how fast those little thumbs work over that tiny keyboard.

Pagers come in all shapes and sizes including those that small keyboards and larger displays. In a recent visit to my cell phone store, I found a cell phone that also was a pager and a PDA. That's one serious new gadget. Composing messages on a two-way pager is much easier with a small keyboard but can also be used for short cryptic messages by placing a cursor over the alphabet and selecting one letter

The use of a two-way pager has opened a new world to those that are deaf or hearing impaired. Uses are able to communicate with friends and family members by text messaging. It opens communication for safety and convenience for the hearing impaired. Pagers can be carried next to their persons and can feel it vibrate. They are not dependent on their hearing to know when a message comes in for them. One Mother wrote that her hearing impaired daughter was late in getting home one evening. By sending her daughter an e-mail, mother was able to contact her daughter and in turn, her daughter filled her in on where she was now. Some of these two-way devices can be used to type in a message and then a phone number. When the phone is answered, a voice says what she types. With her small two-way pager, she can also send faxes, call for help, and feel secure when alone.
