Information On Pager Tones
The term pager tone is often misunderstood. It is the not the sound that the pager makes when it is alerting its owner to an incoming page. It is the tones required to activate the pager to either beep or vibrate, depending on the setting of the pager.
The tones are required to be specific to each pager so that when a person dials that pager number and leave either a call-back number (numeric pager) or a message (text pager), the correct unit is alerted to having a message.
If you are unsure of what your tone is, you can request information from the company that provides your pager service to determine what your specific tone is.
Pager tones have become more technologically advanced since pager systems first came around. In the earlier models of pagers, you actually spoke directly with a person who was responsible for then relaying the page to the person you requested. Now, you simply dial the number and when the beeps resound, you enter the number you wish to have them call back, and the same set of beeps sounds when the numeric message has been accepted.
At this point, the tones have determined which unit to alert of the message and properly relay whatever information was entered into the phone between the beeps.
There is also the option for using your computer to dial pagers now and send messages. There are even specific terminals that provide this service if offered through a particular company.
There is also the option of having several pagers formatted to recognize the same pager tones, if you have a group of people that you may need to contact at one time. This is very useful in the business setting, especially if staff that requires the same notification is spread across a large area.
Pager tones are also used by specific news and sports channels to release updates and information. If you subscribe to a particular alert service, your pager can either be equipped with their release tone, or you can have your tone added to their list of subscribers. This way, when an alert is released, your pager is notified and the information is uploaded for you to view. If you attempt to use a found pager that has this service, the service will only last for as long as the pager itself is active, and for the period of time that the particular pager tone is being used.
