Numeric, Alpha Numeric And Two Way Pagers: Which Is For You?
There are a few options available to you when you are purchasing a pager. One of the basic decisions you will need to make is whether to get a numeric pager, an alpha numeric pager, or a two-way pager. Which one is right for you depends on your specific needs and budget. It would be wise to do your homework before making the purchase, so that you do not end up confused by your choices and make a wrong and needlessly expensive decision.
Numeric pagers don't actually deliver text messages. They display the number you are to call back on the screen. At the pager service center, either your prerecorded message is heard by the caller, or they hear a standard recorded voice message. Another use for numeric pagers is the use of call codes for pre-arranged communications. For example, one code will mean you have a message, another will mean "call home immediately", etc.) A numeric pager is basic and functional and, for many individuals, will serve as all they need in the professional or personal arena. They can store a certain amount of messages and telephone numbers.
Alpha numeric pagers are a bit fancier. They can show you the call back number on the screen or they can show you a text message - which may mean you don't even have to return the call, but can still receive timely and vital information. (As in "Lunch cancelled, emergency office meeting at 2!") Then you have various options in how to respond. You can either call the pager service to leave a number for the person to call you back, or you can download certain programs which allow you to answer with your laptop or PC, or - with some systems and models - you can receive email with your pager and respond with an alpha dispatch (that is, a real live person!). There are various voice mail options also, and even voice pagers. Alpha numeric pagers can store more messages and numbers than can a numeric pager.
Two-way pagers have even more bells and whistles and can resemble a mini- computer both in capacity and price. With a two-way, you can get and send messages without picking up a phone. You can even send and receive email and faxes. You might even discover that you don't even need a wireless phone in your life at all if you have one of these. The technology and ability to interface with other systems is expanding almost on a daily basis in this market, so be sure to check out all the possibilities.
